Abstract
6 - Methyl - 3 - keto - D 4,6- steroid compounds are prepared by treating 6a -methyl-4a ,5- and/or 6a -methyl-4b ,5-epoxides with concentrated sulphuric acid in acetic acid. A mixture of the 4a ,5-and 4b ,5-epoxides for the above process may be prepared by treating 6a - methyl - 3 - keto - D 4 - steroids with alkaline hydrogen peroxide. The steroid compounds may be of the androstane or pregnane series, and the preferred products have the general formula <FORM:0896980/IV (b)/1> wherein R represents hydrogen, OH or OR1, X represents hydrogen or fluorine, and R1 represents an acyl radical of a carboxylic acid having not more than 9 carbon atoms. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 843,353.
