Abstract
The invention comprises 3b -acetoxy-5a -hydroxy-6b -acetylthiocholestane, 5a -hydroxy-6b - acetylthiopregnane - 3,20 - dione and 2a -acetylthio-3b -hydroxy-5b ,22b -spirostane, and a process for the preparation of 5-hydroxy-6-acylthio- and 2-acylthio-3-hydroxy-steroids by treating 5,6-epoxy- and 2,3-epoxy-steroids respectively with alkylthiolic acids, e.g. by heating, preferably in an inert solvent. The above process may be applied to steroids of the spirostane, androstane, pregnane, cholane and cholestane series, e.g. 3b -acetoxy-5a ,6a -epoxy-cholestane, 2b ,3b -epoxy-5b ,22b -spirostane and 5a ,6a - epoxy-pregnane-3,20-dione 3,20-diethylene ketal (in the latter case the ethylene ketal groups are converted to keto groups during the reaction), and some 6b -acetylthio-4-pregnene-3,20-dione is formed as a by-product and which may also be obtained by dehydrating 5a -hydroxy-6b -acetylthiopregnane-3,20-dione.
