Abstract

The invention comprises 3a ,17a -dihydroxy-21 - diiodo - pregn - 9(11)-en-20-one, 3a ,17a -dihydroxy - 16a -methyl-21-diiodo-pregn-9(11)-en-20-one, 16a - methyl - 17a - hydroxy-21-diiodopregna-1,4,9(11)-trien-3,20-dione and a method of introducing an acyloxy group at 21-position of pregnenes and allopregnenes containing a keto group and a 9(11)-double bond which comprises the steps of reacting the said steroid with iodine in the presence of calcium chloride and calcium oxide to yield the corresponding 21-diiodo derivative and treating the latter with alkali metal acylate. Preferably the reaction is effected in methanol at 0-40 DEG C. Examples describe the preparation of 16a -methyl - 17a - hydroxy-21-acetoxy-pregna-1,4, 9(11) - triene-3,20-dione, 3a ,17a -dihydroxy-16a -methyl-21-acetoxy-pregn-9(11)-en-20-one, and 3a ,17a - dihydroxy - 21-acetoxy-pregn-9(11)-en-20-one. Specification 874,779 is referred to.
