Abstract

The invention comprises 11-oxo-steroids of the ergostane, stigmastane and cholestane series and the manufacture of 14-unsubstituted-11, oxo steroids by reacting a 14-unsubstituted-7 : 11-dioxo-steroid to form a 7-mono derivative, e.g. a hydrazone, semicarbazone or oxime, and subjecting the latter to reduction with elimination of the substituent in 7-position. The said 7-mono derivative may be heated with an alkali metal hydroxide or alkoxide. Alternatively, the 7-oxo group may be removed from the 7 : 11-dioxo-steroid by conversion into a 7-mono-dithioketal group which is subsequently eliminated by desulphurization with a nickel catalyst. Examples disclose the use of D 22 : 23-3b -acetoxy - 7 : 11 - dioxo - ergostene, 3b - acetoxy - 7 : 11-dioxo - cholestane, 3a - acetoxy - 7 : 11 - dioxo - cholanic acid methyl ester, 3b : 20-diacetoxy-7 : 11 - dioxo - allopregnane, D 22 : 23 - 3b - acetoxy - 7 : 11 - dioxo - stigmastene and 3b ,17b -diacetoxy-7 : 11-dioxo-androstane as starting materials.
