Abstract

The invention comprises a compound having the formula <FORM:0896818/IV (b)/1> wherein R is a b -hydroxymethylene or carbonyl group, X is fluorine, chlorine or bromine and the 1,2-carbon atom linkage denotes a single or double bond linkage and a process for the preparation thereof by subjecting a compound of the formula <FORM:0896818/IV (b)/2> to reduction, e.g. with zinc in acetic acid, sodium bisulphite, or sodium or potassium thiosulphate. A D 1-double bond may be introduced by microbiological fermentation. Alternatively a 9,11-halohydrin is dehydrated to form a 9,11-dehydro compound, said 9,11-dehydro compound is treated with hypohalous acid followed by epoxidation to form a 9,11-oxido compound which is reacted with HF.
