Abstract

Penicillins of the general formula <FORM:0889231/IV (b)/1> wherein X or Y, but not both, is oxygen or sulphur, the other being a direct linkage between adjacent atoms, R1 and R2 are each a hydrogen or halogen atom or a hydroxyl, C1-C6 alkyl1 C1-C6 alkoxy, nitro, acyloxy, phenoxy or carbethoxy group, and M is hydrogen, a metal, ammonium or amine radical, are prepared by reacting 6-amino-penicillanic acid with a compound producing the group <FORM:0889231/IV (b)/2> such as the corresponding acid, acid halide or anhydride. When the acid is used it is preferably reacted in the presence of a carbodiimide. Penicillins which may be produced by the process of the invention include cis- and trans-styrylmercaptomethyl penicillin and corresponding penicillins derived from a -methyl-trans-styrylmercapto acetic acid, a -methoxy-trans-styrylmercapto acetic acid, a -hydroxy-trans-styrylmercapto acetic acid, 4-phenylmercapto-3-butenoic acid and 4-phenoxy-3-butenoic acid.
