Abstract

The invention comprises 17a -hydroxy-16a -methyl -18- norpregn -4- ene-3, 11, 20-trione of the general formula: <FORM:0963289/C1/1> where R1 is a hydrogen or iodine atom and processes for the preparation thereof in which 4-bromo-17a -hydrox -16a - methyl -18- nor -5b -pregnane-3, 11, 20-trione is dehydrobrominated to obtain 17a -hydroxy -16a - methyl -18- norpregn -4- ene-3, 11, 20-trione which is iodinated in the presence of calcium chloride and calcium oxide to obtain 17a -hydroxy -21- diiodo-16a -methyl -18- norpregn -4- ene-3, 11, 20-trione. Dehydrobromination may be effected with a mixture of lithium bromide and lithium carbonate in solution in N, N-dimethylformamide.
