Abstract
The invention comprises 17b -hydroxy-18-nor-pregna-3, 11, 20-trione derivatives of the general formula: <FORM:0943954/C2/1> in which when the ring A is saturated the hydrogen atom at the 5-position is b -orientated and X represents a hydrogen atom and Y represents a bromine atom or alternatively X represents a bromine atom and Y represents a hydrogen atom, and when ring A is unsaturated there exists a double bond either between the 1, 2-positions and the hydrogen atom at the 5-position is b -orientated or the double bond exists between the 4, 5-positions, and processes for the preparation thereof by brominating 17b -hydroxy-18-nor-pregna-3, 11, 20-trione to yield a mixture of 2-bromo-17b -hydroxy - 18 - nor - pregna-3, 11, 20-trione and of the isomeric 4-bromo-17b -hydroxy-18-nor-pregna-3, 11, 20-trione, and subjecting the mixture thus obtained to dehydrobromination so as to form a dehydrobromination product containing a mixture of 17b -hydroxy-18-nor-pregn-1-ene-3, 11, 20-trione and the isomeric 17b -hydroxy -18-nor-pregn-4-ene-3,11,20-trione. The bromination step may be effected with bromine in the presence of hydrobromic acid, and the dehydrobromination step with lithium bromide/lithium carbonate in N,N-dimethylformamide.
