Abstract

The invention comprises 21-acetoxy-1,4,17(20)-pregnatriene-3,11-dione represented by the formula <FORM:0803655/IV (b)/1> This compound may be obtained by protecting the 3-keto group of methyl 3,11-diketo-1,4,17(20-pregnatrien-21-oate with an enol ether, cyclic ketal, or preferably with a pyrrolidyl enamine, then reducing the 21-carboxyloxy group with lithium aluminium hydride or lithium borohydride, followed by hydrolysis, usually with acid, to regenerate the D 1,4-3-keto group, acylation of the 21-hydroxy group to produce an 11b -hydroxy-21-acetoxy-1,4,17(20)-pregnatrien-3-one and then oxidizing the 11b -hydroxy group to an 11-keto group with chromic acid in glacial acetic acid at 0 DEG C. to produce 21-acetoxy-1,4-17(20-pregnatriene-3,11-dione.
