Abstract

The invention comprises steroids of the formulae: <FORM:0950617/C2/1> <FORM:0950617/C2/2> <FORM:0950617/C2/3> <FORM:0950617/C2/4> <FORM:0950617/C2/5> wherein B is keto; X is hydrogen, hydroxy, acyloxy or keto; D, R and R4 are hydrogen, hydroxy or acyloxy; R1 is hydrogen, hydroxy, acyloxy, or methyl; R2 is hydrogen, hydroxy, acyloxy, methyl or fluoro; R3 is hydrogen or methyl; R5 is hydrogen or fluoro; and A is hydroxy or acyloxy; at least one of R, R1, R,2 R4 and R5 in the third general formula (formula XI) above being other than hydrogen. They may also exist in the 18-hydroxy -20- keto tautomeric forms or, when the 11-substituent is keto, in the 11, 18-epoxide tautomeric forms. They may be prepared from the corresponding D 20,N-18, 20- imino-pregnenes by treatment with nitric acid. In the products, hydroxy groups may be acylated, acyloxy groups may be hydrolysed, 6b -substituents may be isomerized to 6a , 3- or 11-hydroxy substituents may be oxidized to keto groups, and similar keto groups may be reduced. The products may also be converted to D 4-3-ketones by bromination and dehydrobromination of the 3-ketones, or, when R4 is hydroxy, by dehydration. Examples are given. Reference is also made to the preparation by the above method of steroids of the formula: <FORM:0950617/C2/6> wherein R3 and R5 are as defined above; R6, R7, R8 and R9 have the same values as R, R1, R2 and R4 respectively, V has the same values as X, and T is hydrogen, hydroxy, acyloxy or keto Specifications 930,676, 950,615 and 950,616 also are referred to.
