Abstract

The invention comprises steroids of the formula: <FORM:0950615/C2/1> (wherein A is hydroxy, acyloxy or keto; Y is hydrogen, acyloxy or keto; R is hydrogen, hydroxy or acyloxy; R1 is hydrogen, hydroxy, acyloxy or methyl; R2 is hydrogen, fluoro, hydroxy, acyloxy or methyl; R3 is hydrogen or methyl; R4 is hydrogen or acyloxy; R5 is hydrogen or fluoro; at least one of Y, R, R1, R2, R4 and R5 being other than hydrogen when R3 is methyl; Z is an alkyl group of at most 6 carbon atoms; and W is fluorine, chlorine or bromine, the acyl radicals being derived from carboxylic acids of at most 6 carbon atoms) and their preparation from the corresponding 20-N-alkyl-amino-steroids and a halogenating agent. Examples are given. 20-(N-alkylamino)-pregnane starting materials are prepared by reductive amination of the corresponding 20-ketones. 6b -methyl -20a - methylamino -3b , 5a , 11a -triacetoxyallopregnane is prepared by acetylation of the triol. 20-Methylamino-3, 11-allopregnenedione is prepared by oxidation of the 3b -ol. 6a , 9a -difluoro -3b - hydroxy -11, 20- allopregnanedione is prepared by reducing 6a , 9a -difluoro -4- pregnene -3, 11, 20-trione to give 6a , 9a -difluoro -3, 11, 20-allopregnanetrione and then reducing this. 3b , 11b -diacetoxy -19-nor-20- allopregnanone is prepared by reducing 3b , 11b -dihydroxy-19- nor -4- pregnen -20- one and acetylating the resulting 3b , 11b -dihydroxy -19- nor -20- allopregnanone. 6b -fluoro -3b , 5a -diacetoxy -20- allopregnanone is prepared by acetylating the corresponding diol.
