Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:1042292/C2/1> (wherein X is H(OH) or H(O acyl); Y is H (b OH), H(b O acyl), = O, H(COCH3), H(CHOH-CH3) or H(CHO acyl CH3) and R1 and R2 are hydrogen, or alkyl of at most 6 carbon atoms, or -NR1R2 is a saturated heterocyclic amino radical) and acid-addition salts and quaternary ammonium derivatives thereof; and their preparation by reacting the appropriate amine NHR1R2 with the corresponding 5a ,6a -oxido-steroid, and then, when required, esterifying free hydroxy groups in the 3-, 17- and/or 20-positions; or reducing a 17- or 20-keto group to a hydroxyl group; or oxidizing a 3-, 17- or 20-hydroxy group to a keto group. Esterified hydroxy groups may be hydrolysed. Examples are given. 5a ,6a -oxido-steroids used as starting materials are prepared by reacting the corresponding D 5-steroids with, for example, an organic peracid.
