Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0939941/IV(a)/1> wherein R and R1 represent hydrogen atoms, alkyl or aryl groups, one but not both of R or R1 being a hydrogen atom; and the preparation thereof by condensing 5-nitrofurfuraldehyde or its diacetate with an appropriate 3-amino-hydrouracil, or by treating a semicarbazone with a substituted acrylic or b -haloacetic ester, having an alkyl or aryl substituent on the a - or b -carbon atom, in the presence of an alkaline condensation agent in alcoholic solution and then acidifying the reaction mixture and treating it with 5-nitro2-furfuraldehyde or its diacetate. Included in the invention is a variant of the latter process in which the semicarbazone is acetone semicarbazone and in which, after the acidification, the reaction mixture is treated with benzaldehyde and the resulting 3-benzylideneamino-dihydrouracil is isolated and hydrolysed before further treatment with 5-nitrofurfuraldehyde.
