Abstract

The invention comprises keto-alcohols of formula <FORM:0931195/IV(a)/1> wherein R and R1 are nitro, halo, nitroalkyl, alkyl, monocycloalkyl or alkylene carbalkoxy radicals, specifically 5,5,5-trinitro-2-keto-1-pentanol, 5,5-dinitro-2-keto-1-hexanol, heptanol, and -octanol, 5-nitro-5-chloro-2-keto-1-hexanol, 5-nitro- 5-methyl- 2-keto-1-hexanol, methyl-8-hydroxy-7-keto-4,4-dinitro-octanoate and 5-nitro-5-cyclohexyl-2-keto-1-hexanol. The compounds are prepared by reacting hydroxymethyl vinyl ketone with a nitro compound <FORM:0931195/IV(a)/2> wherein R and R1 are nitro, halo, alkyl, nitroalkyl, monocycloalkyl or alkylene carbalkoxy radicals, preferably in the presence of a catalyst such as aqueous sodium hydroxide or a mixture of sulphuric acid and mercuric sulphate. The compounds may be reduced to diols which condense with polybasic acids to form polymers.
