Abstract

The invention comprises 21-acetoxy-6a -fluoro-16a - methyl - pregna - 1,4 - diene - 3,11,20-trione and processes for the dehydrogenation of steroid compounds, in which a 3-keto-D 4-steroid of the pregnane, estrane or androstane series is reacted in a neutral solvent at elevated temperature with 2,3-dicyano-5,6-dibromo-benzoquinone to form the corresponding 3-keto-D 1 4-steroid compound. Any unreacted 2,3-dicyano - 5,6 - dibromobenzoquinone may be reduced to 2,3-dicyano-5,6-dibromo-hydroquinone with sodium hyposulphite which is removed by fractional crystallization. Subsequently the 2,3 - dicyano - 5,6 - dibromobenzohydroquinone may be isolated from the dehydrogenation reaction product and subjected to nitric oxidation to recover 2,3-dicyano-5,6-dibromobenzoquinone.
