Abstract

The invention comprises a steroid compound having the formula <FORM:0763836/IV(b)/1> wherein R is hydrogen or methyl and wherein R1 is hydrogen or the acyl radical of a hydrocarbon carboxylic acid containing from one to eight carbon atoms inclusive, and the process for the production of 11-ketotestosterone, 10 - normethyl - 11 - ketotestosterone, and 17 - esters thereof, comprising treating with chromic acid an 11b -hydroxy-17-acyloxy-testosterone or 10 - normethyl - 11b - hydroxy - 17 - acyloxytestosterone, wherein the acyloxy group contains up to eight carbon atoms. Examples describe the preparation of 11-ketotestosterone and the acetate and propionate thereof and 10-normethyl-11-ketotestosterone and the propionate thereof. Specification 763,835 is referred to.
