Abstract

The invention comprises 3b ,16-dihydroxy-16, 17-seco- 18-nor-D-homo- 13#x-androstane-17-carboxylic acid of the formula <FORM:0922653/IV(a)/1> 3-keto-16,17- seco-18-nor- D-homo- 13#x-and-rostane- 16, 17-dicarboxylic acid of the formula <FORM:0922653/IV(a)/2> 3b -acyloxy- 16,17-seco- 18-nor-D- homo-13#x-androstane-16, 17-dicarboxylic derivatives of the general formula <FORM:0922653/IV(a)/3> wherein the acyloxy radical is derived from an organic carboxylic acid having from 1 to 7 carbon atoms, 3b -hydroxy-16,17-seco-18-nor-D- homo- 13#x-androstane- 16, 17- dicarboxylic acid of the formula <FORM:0922653/IV(a)/4> diesters of 16,17-seco- 18-nor-D- homo-13#x-androstane-16,17-dicarboxylic acids of the formula <FORM:0922653/IV(a)/5> wherein R represents a keto or b -hydroxy group and R1 represents an alkyl group containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and the preparation of the first compound above by saponifying the lactone of a 3b -acyloxy-16-hydroxy- 16, 17-seco- 18-nor- D-homo- 13#x-androstane-17-carboxylic acid of the formula <FORM:0922653/IV(a)/6> wherein the acyloxy radical has the above significance, a process for the preparation of the compound of the second formula above by oxidising the compound of the first formula above and by oxidising the compound of the fourth formula above, and a process for the preparation of the compounds of the third formula above by oxidising compounds of the formula <FORM:0922653/IV(a)/7> wherein Ac has the above significance, with hot chromic acid in a lower organic carboxylic acid, and by treating the lactones of the sixth general formula above with chromium trioxide in acetone in the presence of a mineral acid.
