The invention comprises saturated compounds of the cyclopentanophenanthrene series containing a keto group as substituent in 3-position, a free or functionally-derived hydroxyl group in 11a -position, in 17-position a free or functionally derived carboxyl group and a halogen atom in 4-position. In an example, 3-keto-11a -acetoxy-etiocholanic acid methyl ester is treated with bromine to produce 4-bromo - 3 - keto - 11a - acetoxyethiocholanic acid methyl ester.
