Abstract

The invention comprises saturated compounds of the cyclopentanophenanthrene series containing a keto group as substituent in 3-position, a free or functionally derived hydroxyl group in 11a -position and in 17-position a free or functionally derived carboxyl group. In an example 3b ,11a - diacetoxyetiocholanic acid methyl ester is hydrolysed to produce 3b -hydroxy-11a -acetoxy-etiocholanic acid methyl ester, which is subsequently oxidized to 3-keto-11a -acetoxy-etiocholanic acid methyl ester.
