Abstract

The invention comprises steroids of the androstane or pregnane series (including the pregnene or androstene series) which have a 9b :11b -oxido group and are saturated and unsubstituted in the 7- and 8-positions, particularly those having the general formula <FORM:0792225/IV (b)/1> wherein the 4,5-position is double-bonded or saturated, R is H and R1 is OH or R and R1 together represent =O or a group convertible thereto by hydrolysis (e.g. a ketal, especially a cyclic ketal, group), Y is H, OH or O Acyl and Z is H or a -OH; and a process for preparing a steroid of the androstane or pregnane series having a 9b :11b -oxido group which comprises treating a 9a -halo-11b -hydroxysteroid of the androstane or pregnane series with a salt of a strong base and a weak acid in an aqueous medium. In examples: (1) (a) 9a -bromo- D 4-pregnene - 11b :17a :21 - triol - 3:20 - dione 21-acetate is allowed to stand with potassium bicarbonate in aqueous methanol, producing D 4 - pregnene - 9b :11b - oxido - 17a :21 - diol - 3:20-dione; (1) (b) the same starting material is refluxed with potassium acetate in absolute alcohol to give D 4-pregnene-9b :11b -oxido-17a :21-diol-3:20-dione 21-acetate. Additional starting materials specified are 9a -bromo- D 4-pregnene - 11b :21 - diol - 3:20 - dione 21-acetate and 9a - bromo - D 4 - pregnen - 11b - ol-3:20-dione.
