Abstract

The invention comprises D 4,6-3,19-dioxo-steroids and D 4,6-3-oxo-steroid-19-acids of the androstane and 20-keto-pregnane series, the preparation of the dioxo compounds of any steroid series by oxidation of D 4,6-3-oxo-19-hydroxy-steroids with chromium trioxide in pyridine, and the preparation of the 3-oxo-19-acid of any steroid series by oxidation of the 19-hydroxy or 19-oxo compounds with a compound of hexavalent chromium in the presence of a strong acid. The steroids, e.g. of the androstane, pregnane cholane cholestane, spirostane or cardanolide series, may contain free, ketalized or enolized oxo groups, free, esterified or etherified hydroxyl groups, alkyl groups and/or halogen atoms as substituents in the ring or 17-side chain, and they may also contain additional double bonds and oxido groups. Particularly mentioned are 17-oxo, 17b -hydroxy and 17b -hydroxy - 17a -(alkyl, alkenyl or alkyenyl)-androstane compounds and 20-oxo pregnane compounds which may contain 17a -hydroxy, 21-hydroxy, 6- and 16-methyl, 6-halo and 16,17-oxido substituents and D 16-double bonds; and esters of these compounds with a wide variety of organic carboxylic and carbonic acids; and 17-ethers. Examples are given. D 4,6 - 3,20 - dioxo - 17a - caproyloxy - 19 - hydroxy - pregnadiene is prepared by reacting D 4 - 3,20 - dioxo - 17a - caproyloxy - 6b ,19-oxido-pregnane with acetic anhydride and p-toluene-sulphonic acid, followed by partial hydrolysis of the 19-acetate.
