Abstract
941,695. 11#,18-Oxido-steroids. CIBA Ltd. Feb. 9, 1960 [Feb. 12, 1959], No. 4619/60. Heading C2U. 11#,18-oxido-steroids are prepared by reacting 18-unsubstituted 11 #-hydroxy-steroids with a lead tetra-acylate. The starting material may be a steroid of the cholestane, coprostane, ergostane, spirostane, cholane, norcholane, bisnorcholane, pregnane or androstane series, and preferably contains a free hydroxyl group in only the 11- position. It may also contain further substituents such as esterified or etherified hydroxy groups, free or ketalized oxo groups, alkyl groups or halogen atoms; and it may contain double bonds, especially #<SP>4</SP> or #<SP>5</SP>. In an example #<SP>5</SP>-3,20- bisethylenedioxy-11#-hydroxy-pregnane is refluxed with lead tetra-acetate in benzene to give #<SP>5</SP>-3,20-bis-ethylenedioxy-11,18-oxido-pregnene which is then converted to #<SP> 4</SP>-3,20-dioxo-11#, 18-oxido-pregnene. The preparation of 3#- acetoxy-20-oxo-11#, 18-oxido-5α-pregnane is also referred to, and a list of further starting materials is also provided. Specification 936,345 is referred to.
