Abstract
D 1,4 - 3 - Keto - steroids of the androstane, pregnane or sapogenin series are prepared by subjecting D 4-3-keto- or D 5-3-hydroxy- or -acyloxy-steroids to the oxidizing action of enzymes produced by the micro-organism Mycobacterium acapulcensis. The starting materials may contain the conventional 17-substituents e.g. keto, b -hydroxy with or without a -hydrocarbon, b -acetyl with or without a -hydroxy or acyloxy, or dihydroxyacetone which may be esterified or converted to bismethylenedioxy. They may also contain further substituents e.g. keto and enol esters and ketals thereof; hydroxy and esters, ethers, acetals and ketals thereof; halogen atoms; and alkyl groups. Acyloxy groups are generally hydrolysed during the process, and primary or secondary free hydroxyl groups other than at positions 11 and 21 are generally oxidized. Examples are give.
