Abstract

Hydroxyketones of the pregnane series are obtained by treating a D 17 : 20-20-cyano-pregnene compound containing in the 21-position an esterified or etherified hydroxyl group with permanganate in an organic neutral or weakly alkaline medium and hydrogen cyanide is simultaneously or subsequently split off from the compound formed. The starting materials may be substituted in the 5-, 6-, 7-, 12-, 3- and 11-positions, e.g. by free keto or hydroxyl groups or by substituents convertible into keto or hydroxyl groups by hydrolysis as by acyloxy, alkoxy, acetalized or enolized keto groups, by epoxy groups or by halogen atoms. The reaction may be effected in aqueous organic medium, such as aqueous acetone, isopropyl alcohol or isobutyl alcohol.
