Abstract
Ferrous shot is formed by dropping globules of molten metal into a quench bath consisting only of water and an organic antioxidant; the latter is an alcohol, ketone, aldehyde, ester or organic acid, e.g. methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, acetone, n-butanol, isopropenol, methyl ethyl ketone, paraldehyde, tertiary butyl alcohol, acetic acid or ethyl acetate; and the proportion of antioxidant, which does not exceed 10 per cent. is sufficient to inhibit oxidation but insufficient to produce cavities in the globules.
