Abstract

D 1,4-3-keto-steroids are prepared by treating in compounds of the cyclopentanopolyhydrophenanthrene series at least the 3-position of which bear a carbonyl group and at least the 1-and 2-positions of which are saturated by hydrogen atoms with dibenzoyloxyselenium oxide of the formula: <FORM:0844319/IV(b)/1> The treatment may be effected by heating the reactants with or without a solvent. The reactants may contain one on more substituents such as alkyl, halogen, hydroxyl, carboxyl, acyl or keto substituents e.g. in one or more of the 6,7, 10,11,13,16, and 17 positions. In the examples D 1,4-pregnadiene-17a ,21-diol-3,20-dione and the 21-acetate thereof, prednisone acetate and prednisolone acetate are prepared. Dibenzoyloxyselenium dioxide of the above formula is prepared by fusing selenium dioxide and benzoic acid anhydride.
