Abstract

1,4-Pregnadienes of the general formula <FORM:0835836/IV (b)/1> wherein R and R1 represent hydrogen or alkanoyl radicals containing up to 6 carbon atoms and X represents a halogen, are prepared by reacting the corresponding 4-pregnene with selenium dioxide and, when required, converting R and R1 to hydrogen e.g. by reaction with an alkali metal alkoxide. In the examples 9a - fluoro - 11b ,16a ,17a ,21 - tetrahydroxy - 1,4 - pregnadiene - 3,20 - dione and the corresponding 16a ,21-diacetoxy compound are prepared.
