Abstract

The invention comprises a process for preparing compounds of formula <FORM:1060354/C2/1> wherein R is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group or, in combination with the 17a -hydroxy group, a 16a ,17a -diol-16a ,17a -acetonide group, by reaction of a corresponding 3b -hydroxy-5,6-dibromopregnane, oxidizing this with Jones reagent to form a 3-keto-5,6-dibromo-pregnane, and debrominating this compound, followed if desired by acid isomersation. Pregn - 5 - em - 3b ,16a ,17a ,21 - tetrol - 20 - one-21 - acetate - 16,17 - acetonide is prepared by reaction of the 16a ,17a -diol with acetone.
