Abstract

Novel 1 - (o - hydroxyalkyl) - 5 - nitroimidazole - 2 - carboxylic acid lactones of formula <FORM:1077694/C2/1> where n is 2, 3 or 4, are prepared by sulphonating a 1-(o -hydroxyalkyl)-2-(b -phenylvinyl)-5-nitroimidazole where the o -hydroxyalkyl group is 2 hydroxyethyl, 3-hydroxy-n-propyl, or 4-hydroxy-n-butyl, to produce the corresponding 1 - (o - sulphonyloxyalkyl) - 2 - (b - phenylvinyl)-5 - nitroimidazole and oxidizing this compound. The 1 - (o - hydroxyalkyl) - 2 - (b - phenylvinyl)-5 -nitroimidazoles may be prepared by reacting a 1-(o -hydroxyalkyl)-2-methyl-5-nitroimidazole with benzaldehyde.
