Abstract

Oxide-coated aluminium or aluminium alloy articles are coloured by immersion in an aqueous solution containing ferric oxalate. The solution may also contain a soluble alkali metal or ammonium oxalate preferably in the proportion of 3 mols to each mol of ferric oxalate. Alternatively the ferric oxalate may be produced in solution by the addition of a soluble oxalate (e.g., potassium oxalate) to a solution of a ferric salt such as the nitrate, chloride or sulphate. The amount of ferric oxalate used in solution may be 3-20 per cent, and preferably 5-10 per cent, and the pH may be 2-7 and preferably 6-6.5, pH adjustment being effected by the addition of, e.g., ammonium hydroxide to the solution. The oxide coating is artificially produced, preferably anodically, and may be obtained by treatment of the aluminium or aluminium alloy with acids such as sulphuric or chromic, alkalis such as sodium carbonate or the alkali sulphate, and acid sulphates such as sodium or sodium acid sulphate; with or without the application of the electric current.
