Abstract

436,481. Reflectors. ALUMINIUM CO. OF AMERICA, Gulf Building, Pittsburg, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Mason, R. B., and Tosterud, M.) April 5, 1934, No. 10340. Convention date, Feb. 10. [Class 97 (i)] [See also Group XXXVI] A highly reflecting surface is produced on articles of aluminium or its alloys by anodic treatment in an electrolyte containing chromic acid and hydrofluoric acid. Suitable proportions are 1À0-25À0 per cent of CrO3 and 0À2-1À5 per cent of HF. A thin transparent and colourless protective film is formed simultaneously with the brightening action. The surface may be further protected by coating with a clear lacquer or varnish, or by further anodic treatment in a sulphuric or oxalic bath to produce a clear transparent coating of aluminium oxide. The latter coating may be rendered impermeable by treatment in hot water at 80-100‹ C., as described in Specification 406,988, [Group XXXVI].
