Abstract

449,162. Electrolytic surface treatment of aluminium and its alloys. PULLEN, A. N. D., and BRITISH ALUMINIUM CO., Ltd., Adelaide House, King William Street, London. Dec. 17, 1934, No. 36187. [Class 41] The metals are treated to increase their specular reflectivity by immersion, after degreasing, in an aqueous solution containing sodium carbonate and sodium orthophosphate in the proportion 3 to 1 by weight and having a pH value of 10 or more, the bath being at a temperature of 75‹-85‹ C. ; the solution may contain in addition alkali metal salts such as borates or chromates. After about ten seconds immersion, the current is turned on with the article as anode the initial current density being about 30 amps per square foot, and treatment is maintained for 10-15 minutes. The article thus brightened carries a thin film of oxide ; after rinsing, a protective film is applied by anodic or alternating current treatment in an acid bath containing 5-40 per cent of sodium bisulphate. The bath is operated at 20‹-50‹ C. with current density 5 amps. per square foot for a period of 10-15 minutes. The sodium bisulphate bath may contain in addition sulphuric, chromic, boric, phosphoric or acetic acids or their salts, or chromium sulphate or chromium oxalate.
