Abstract
436,154. Electrolytic surface treatment of aluminium and its alloys. ALUMINUM CO. OF AMFRICA, Gulf Building, Pittsburg, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Mason, R. B., and Tosterud, M.) April 5, 1934, No. 10341. Convention date, Feb. 10. [Class 41] A bright surface of high reflectivity is produced on aluminium or an aluminium alloy by anodic treatment in a solution containing 1-60 per cent by weight of sulphuric acid together with hydrofluoric acid. Preferable proportions are 5-35 per cent sulphuric acid and 0À2-1À5 per cent hydrofluoric acid. A temperature of 30-70 C., and current density 10-100 amps. per sq. ft. are suitable. Direct or alternating current may be employed. The treated surface may be coated with clear lacquer or varnish and alternatively it may be subjected to further anodic treatment in a sulphuric acid or oxalic acid bath to produce a clear, transparent oxide coating which does not appreciably impair the reflectivity. This coating may be rendered impermeable by treating with water 80-100 C., as described in Specification 406,988.
