Abstract

528,748. Etching. ALUMINUM COLORS, Inc. May 2, 1939, No. 13096. Convention date, May 3, 1938. [Class 100 (ii)] [Also in Groups II, III and XXXVI] Relates to the treatment of aluminium or aluminium base alloy surfaces to secure the firm adherence thereto of a subsequently applied coating of paint, or electrochemically deposited metallic or non-metallic material, or coatings applied mechanically, such as rolled or sprayed coatings. The surface is treated in an aqueous alkali-metal carbonate-chromate solution, preferably at or near boiling temperature, to produce an oxide coating on the surface, and the oxide coating is thereafter removed with an aqueous solution of chromic and/or nitric acids the surface being left uniformly etched. The carbonate-chromate solution preferably contains alkali metal carbonates and dichromates in the ratio of about 3 : 1, the chromic acid solution preferably contains 5 per cent by weight of chromic acid, and the nitric acid solution contains 5-70 per cent., preferably 35 per cent., by weight of nitric acid. When a metallic coating is to be applied, as by electroplating, to the surface, the oxide coating is preferably removed by the nitric acid solution, which is employed at room temperature. The chromic acid solution is preferably employed at a temperature of approximately 180‹F. Specifications 393,996 and 396,204, [both in Group II], are referred to.
