Abstract

Coloured coatings are formed on aluminium or aluminium alloy articles by oxidizing the articles and then passing A.C. between the article and a carbon, carborundum, or aluminium electrode through an aqueous bath containing a salt which yields a coloured metal oxide or hydroxide. Preferably the article is anodized with D.C. in a chromic, sulphuric, or sulphamic acid solution and is thereafter coloured by passing A.C. through an acid solution containing sulphuric, phosphoric, sulphamic, tartaric or boric acid and a salt of one of the metals Cu, Ag, Au, Cd, V, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni with an anion chosen from nitrate, sulphate, phosphate, acetate, oxalate, citrate or a selenite, tellurite, manganate or permanganate e.g. of al alkali metal. The coloured coating may be sealed in boiling water.
