Abstract

Uniformly coloured anodized aluminium and aluminium alloy articles are produced without dyeing by, after pickling, e.g. in caustic soda solution, and degreasing the article, anodically oxidizing it to form an oxide layer of thickness 2 to 10m in a bath containing sulphuric and/or oxalic acid or a high throwing power electrolyte such as a chromic acid bath, thoroughly rinsing in water, and then effecting a second anodization in a bath comprising sulphate ions, e.g. provided as sulphuric acid, and one or more organic acids of the kind which cause formation of a coloured oxide layer, such as sulphosalicylic, sulphophthalic or maleic acid. Examples are given of producing brown colours on two aluminium alloys containing respectively by weight 1.1% Mg, 0.25% Fe and 0.30% Si and 1% Mg, 0.3% Fe, 0.8% Si and 0.6% Mn, the first oxide layer being of thickness 6m and the color anodized layer being of thickness of say 20m .
