Abstract

522,571. Electrolytic surface treatment of aluminium. FRASCH, J. Dec. 9, 1938, No. 35947. Convention date, Dec: 17, 1937. [Class 41] Articles of aluminium or its alloys are anodically oxidized in a solution of an aluminate, a silicate and a caustic base in amount not exceeding one-fifth of that of the aluminate and silicate together, the pH value being between 8.5 and 12. A suitable bath contains 30 gms. sodium aluminate, 10 gms. sodium silicate and 8 gms. caustic soda per litre. The temperature is maintained at 15‹C. by introduction of compressed air. Alternating, current of 110 volts may be employed. The article is withdrawn when the current has diminished approximately to zero. The article may be first treated by sand-blasting, polishing or brushing, or by immersion in nitric acid or caustic soda and then degreased electrolytically, or in a 5-10 per cent. solution of sodium carbonate or with ethylene trichloride. After coating the article is rinsed with water and with aqueous ammonia. It may then be immersed in a bath at 95‹C. of composition 20 gms. sodium aluminate, 20 gms. sodium silicate, 2 gms. caustic soda per litre.
