Abstract

723,945. Electro-polishing gold and gold alloys. DEUTSCHE GOLDUND SILBERSCHEIDEANSTALT VORM ROESSLER. Sept. 5, 1952 [Sept. 20, 1951], No. 22435/52. Class 41. In an electrolytic process for smoothing and polishing the surface of a body of gold or gold alloy of a fineness of at least 333 parts in 1000 parts, the body is subjected to anodic treatment in an acid thiourea solution containing at least 5 gm. of free thiourea per litre at a temperature of up to 100‹ C., preferably 30‹ to 60‹ C., using an anodic current density which promotes the temporary formation of a surface layer coating the anode. The solution preferably contains 15 to 60 gms. of thiourea per litre, and may be acidified with inorganic acids, particularly sulphuric acid, or organic acids such as tartaric acid, or with acid salts or mixtures of acid salts with one another or with acids. The solution may also contain antipyrine to increase the solubility of the thiourea.
