Abstract

558,726. Electro-polishing copper. BATTELLE MEMORIAL INSTITUTE. Jan. 13, 1943, No. 648. Convention date, April 24, 1942. [Class 41] Copper is polished by being made the anode in a bath consisting of a concentrated aqueous solution of orthophosphoric acid (75 to 84 per cent) containing a small amount of trivalent aluminium (.25 to 2 per cent) to render the anodically dissolved copper recoverable by cathodic deposition. Trivalent chromium not exceeding 2 per cent and divalent copper from .5 to 1 per cent may be present. The bath temperature is maintained at 110‹ F. or over and a current density of at least 50 ampÞres per square foot (preferably 75 to 200) is employed.
