Abstract

655,699. Brightening chromium or aluminium alloys electrolytically. SOC. DE PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DESTERRES RARES. Sept. 16, 1948, No. 24344. Convention date, Sept. 24, 1947. [Class 41] A process of brightening the surface of an article of aluminium or aluminium alloy comprises degreasing the surface, immersing the article in a strongly acid phospho-chromic solution, submitting the article as anode to electrolyte treatment in an alkaline bath containing phosphate and aluminate ions, immersing the article again in a strongly acid phospho-chromic solution, and submitting the article to anodic oxidation in an acid electrolyte. The first-mentioned strongly acid solution preferably contains about 30 to 35 per cent phosphoric acid and about 10 to 15 per cent chromic acid and has a pH value below 1. The article may be degreased electrolytically in a solution of 5 per cent sodium carbonate, 5 per cent sodium phosphate and 2 per cent sodium silicate at room temperature,. with a voltage of 10 to 12 volts. The bath containing phosphate and aluminate ions may be prepared by dissolving trisodium phosphate and sodium aluminate in water or by dissolving aluminium phosphate in caustic soda solution. Potassium compounds may be used instead of sodium compounds. The anodized article may be sealed in boiling water or in an aqueous solution of nickel acetate.
