Abstract

Graphite residues left on the surface of iron alloys after electrolytic descaling are removed by treatment in nitric acid or in solutions of chromates, manganates, vanadates, pure chromic acid, chloric acid compounds or perchlorates alone or with nitric acid. A pickling treatment in a bath containing nitrate or nitrite ions may be applied before the electrolytic treatment or between anodic and cathodic stages included in the electrolytic treatment; this bath may also contain mineral and/or organic acids in slight concentration and a pickling inhibitor such as thiourea.
