Abstract
576,698. Electrolytic cleaning. RYLANDS BROS., Ltd., BROWN, R. S., and BRIERLEY, A. April 1, 1944, No. 6112. [Class 41] A process for cleaning the surface of a metal, particularly iron or steel, consists in subjecting the metal to a vigorous attack by a strongly oxidising acid, e.g., nitric, phosphoric or chromic acids. So as to convert the contaminating matter, such as lubricant, on the metal into a finely divided film of smut, which is easily removable by anodic treatment in an electrolyte, examples of which are given, of a solution of a mineral or organic acid, or salt thereof. The metal may be given a waterwash between the two stages of the process. An initial cleaning in acid may be given to remove rust or scale from the surface of the metal.
