Abstract

Stainless steel sheet or strip is first annealed in a reducing atmosphere, e.g. of H or cracked ammonia, and then treated anodically in an electrolyte containing one of acetic acid, formic acid, chromic acid, or caustic soda solution, to give it a high polish. A pre-treatment applying HNO3 or H2SO4 cathodically may be applied. The annealing treatment is effected at 1250-2050 DEG F. using a reducing gas low in moisture, and is applied to all types of Cr-containing stainless steels which may include other alloying metals. The anodic treatment is effected at 40-120 DEG F. using a solution containing 3-60% of chromic acid, and lower concentrations for the other specified reagents, down to 3-20% NaOH.
