Abstract

Oxide is removed from the surface of oxidized Co-Ni-Fe alloys by immersion in a hot bath consisting, apart from minor amounts of scavengers, activators, and inhibitors, of ammonium sulphate in aqueous sulphuric acid, the concentration of the ammonium sulphate being at least 75 gm. per 100 ml. of aqueous acid. The acid concentration is preferably 15-30 per cent by volume of 66 DEG Beaum<\>ae H2SO4; the temperature is at least 50 DEG C. and preferably 90 DEG ta 100 DEG C.; also the solution may be saturated with ammonium sulphate, the latter apparently acting as an inhibitor Alloys particularly concerned contain 5 to 25 per cent Co, 24 to 34 per cent Ni and the balance Fe apart from e.g. Mn below 1 per cent. The treatment is said to be especially useful in respect of Co-Ni-Fe alloy parts of electrical or electronic apparatus (e.g. diode pins) which have been oxidized, for example by heating to 750 DEG C. or thereabouts in a water vapour atmosphere, in order that glass may be sealed thereto; the exposed parts of the pins being subsequently treated to remove the oxide coating. The treated alloy may be vapour-, chemical-, or electro plated.
