Abstract

A method of casting a base with a film of polytetrafluoroethylene comprises producing anchoring cavities in the base which are smaller than 30 microns and then applying an aqueous-dispersion of polytetrafluoroethylene. Numerous examples of treating various metals with acids are given. Aluminium is treated with 10 per cent (concentration by weight) of hydrochloric acid for a duration varying with the temperature of the acid, at 75 DEG C. it is treated for 8 minutes. The aluminium is rinsed, dried and an aqueous dispersion of polytetrafluoroethylene is applied; it is then dried and fused. The application may be repeated to produce a greater thickness of polytetrafluoroethylene. Each succeeding application may have a higher concentration. It is necessary to treat annealed aluminium with the acid for a longer time or with the addition of nitric acid. For an aluminium alloy containing copper, magnesium and manganese the alloy is dipped in 1-5 per cent hydrofluoric acid, is washed, dipped in 40 per cent hydrochloric acid, then dipped in 40 per cent nitric acid. Concentrated soda solution may be used instead of the hydrofluoric acid. For an aluminium alloy with magnesium and manganese 10 per cent hydrochloric acid is applied. For aluminium or an aluminium alloy a sulpho-chromic solution containing sulphuric acid 50 gms., chromium trioxide 20 gms. and water 150 gms. is applied at 50-80 DEG C. for 10 minutes. Bronze is treated with 12 per cent nitric acid at 20 DEG C. for 20 minutes. Copper is first covered with electrolytic zinc then 15 per cent hydrochloric acid is applied for 15 minutes at 20 DEG C. A stub steel containing chromium, carbon and vanadium is treated with 10 per cent nitric acid for 6 minutes at 20 DEG C. A steel containing carbon and manganese is treated with 10 per cent nitric acid for 10 minutes at 20 DEG C. is brushed and treated again for 5 minutes. Half-cold-hardened low carbon steel containing manganese is treated with 10 per cent nitric acid for 12 minutes at 20 DEG C. Siemens Martin steel containing carbon and manganese is treated with 10 per cent nitric acid for 8 minutes at 20 DEG C., is brushed, then dipped again for 4 minutes. Aluminium is treated with the sulphochromic solution with hydrochloric acid added at 60 DEG C. for a few minutes, then it is treated with the solution without the hydrochloric acid. Enamelled iron and copper is treated with 15 per cent hydrofluoric acid at 20 DEG C. for 25 minutes.
