Abstract

418,498. Electrolytic surface treatment of aluminium and its alloys. SIEMENS & HALSKE AKT.-GES., Siemensstadt, Berlin. April 25, 1934, No. 12501. Convention date, April 25, 1933. Addition to 407,830. [Class 41.] A porous layer of metallic lustre, serving as carrier for the light-sensitive substance, is produced by subjecting a plate, foil &c. of aluminium or aluminium alloy to the action of an electric current in two different baths successively, e.g. baths of chromic, oxalic, sulphuric or malonic acids. Preferably, the articles are connected, as anodes, to a source of direct current, but alternating current, pulsating direct current, or direct superimposed or alternating current may be employed ; a direct current may be employed in the first and alternating current in the second bath. In an example, a polished aluminium sheet, as anode, is subjected to the action of direct current, first in a 20 per cent chromic acid bath heated to 65‹ C. and then in a 3 per cent oxalic acid bath at 35‹ C. After washing and drying, the surface is impregnated successively with solutions of ammonium chloride and silver nitrate and dried, giving a colourless photographic layer adapted for copying or exposure. The photographic reproduction, after fixing and toning, is coated with oil, fat or lacquer.
