Abstract

1,131,558. Electro-deposition of nickel on to aluminium articles. TOYOTA CHUO KENKYUSHO K.K. May 22, 1967 [June 2, 1966], No.23720/67. Heading C7B. A method of electro-plating nickel on to an aluminium article comprises immersing the aluminium article together with a second electrode of a nobler metal, e.g. nickel or stainless steel, or carbon in an acidic electrolyte containing nickel ions and applying alternating current to said electrodes to produce a layer of aluminium oxide mixed with nickel oxide on the surface of the aluminium article, and subsequently applying direct current with said aluminium article forming the cathode to reduce the nickel oxide and to deposit additional nickel thereon, to form a firmly adherent coating on the article. The electrolyte used may comprise an aqueous solution containing at least one of the salts nickel sulphate, nickel ammonium sulphate and nickel chloride; at least one of the compounds boric acid, urea, ammonium sulphate and ammonium acetate and at least one of the salts magnesium sulphate, ammonium sulphate, and sodium sulphate. The two electrolysis steps may be applied in the same bath or in separate baths. The article may previously be degreased with a soapless detergent, and may subsequently be heat-treated, e.g. at 300‹C. for about 5 minutes.
