Abstract

Prior to cold working by means of a die, extrusion-nozzle or other relatively sliding surface, a metallic body is subjected to one or more cycles of treatment comprising initial oxidation and subsequent reduction so as to form a porous surface film and thus provide for lubrication of the body during the working. The oxidation may be effected by heat-treatment in air or anodic treatment in an electrolyte and the reduction may be effected by heat-treatment at high temperature in the presence of hydrogen or cathodic treatment in an electrolyte. Metals which may be treated include copper, brass, mild steel, chomium steel, nickel, titanium and zirconium.
