Abstract
A metal above iron in the electromotive series (e.g. aluminium, magnesium, uranium, zinc) is prepared for electroplating with e.g. chromium, copper, iron, nickel or zinc, by treating its surface with a molten hydrate of ferric chloride. The treatment etches the surface and at the same time deposits iron thereon. The hydrate used is preferably FeCl3.6H2O.
