Abstract

571,307. Coating metals. BUTTONS, Ltd., CHECKLEY, A., and MEALINGS, G. Nov. 8, 1943, No. 18504. [Class 82 (ii)] Metal surfaces are given a protective coating by immersing them in a solution of potassium bichromate and a hydroxide, preferably sodium hydroxide, at a temperature of 180‹-380‹ F. Usually 1 lb. of bichromate is added to 2 pints of water and then 1 lb. of sodium hydroxide, and the solution brought to the boil before use. Alternatively, up to 4 parts of hydroxide to 1 part of bichromate may be used. To produce a darker shade in the coating, 4-8 ounces of potassium carbonate per gallon of solution may be added to the bath. The coated articles may be given a further coating of oil, wax or lacquer.
